Cheetah Files - Preemie Life 22 Months

I wish I could bottle Cheetah up and take a little sip of her everyday.  She is the Energizer Bunny on Methamphetamine.  Remember people I have four children so this is not my first time at the rodeo but man this girl has kick.  Trouble at her birth just a preview for her future.

She loves this window seat!  I mean just absolutely loves it.  She will climb up there and yell at her dad, the garbage truck, her siblings, the bus.  She knows words for pretty much everything and loves labeling things at the top of her lungs!
Peach and Cheetah spend many hours together.  One of their favorite things to do is read and they especially love this popping book my mom found at Costco.  Pretty much you just keep pushing these pieces of plastic back and forth and they make a pop sound, like a never ending piece of bubble wrap.  They love it!

Cheetah also loves to raid shoes from mom and dad's closet.  This activity drives daddy bonkers because said shoes disappear and he'll be looking all over the house for his "other brown shoe!"

She climbs into the sinks all the time.  Sometimes she'll get all the way in and turn on the hot water.  It drives me bonkers, but her newest feat is even more spectacular, she'll just hang on the edge of the sink like this, turn on the cold water and get a drink.  Who the heck does this?  I mean seriously, what 22 month old climbs the sink to get drinks?  This child is a weird one :)

More recent months have also found her exploring the world as a nudist.  The likes to help get herself dressed has morphed into the can take all her clothes off and be out of her diaper in ten seconds or less.  Seriously such a pain!  Especially since this girl has since this discovery gotten poop all over my floor no less than three times.  So we've started a onsie always rule and she now sleeps always in footy pajamas.  One can only clean so much poop off the floor before one goes crazy :-/

Also we've found a new love in life...this girl LOVES ELMO!  I mean just really LOVES HIM!  The first thing she'll ask for most mornings is him, the last thing she ask for, if she sees a phone, or ipad, or tv, she always says ELMO, ELMO, ELMO!  I found this Elmo stuffed animal that has been kicking around our house for years and she is just over the moon about it.

This girl loves her veggies, takes after her sister Gigi she does.  If I leave the fridge open for a sec, I will often find her looking for delicious bits.  She cracks me up!

This year with her two older siblings in full time school, and Peach in preschool and a much desired play date, Cheetah's gotten a little more time with mom to herself .  She's enjoying it by running errands, reading books, and playing dance parties.

This girl is still a bit of a destructomatic.  I took her to this bookstore and within a second she had a whole row of books down.  This is of course while her sister was calmly looking for a My Secret Unicorn book.  Oh well.  I guess that is the difference 2 years makes :)

This girl is still such a dare devil.  This playground is for the big kids but she is all over it.  Recently she was yelling at me from the platform where the monkey bars are, they are still about three feet to high for her to reach, "Up mama, UP!"  Yeah kid, sure I'll do that and then I'll get ready to drive you to the emergency room to have your arm set.

Oh yeah, look here I am a nude again.  Good grief.  This was the same day she escaped out of the side gate and the neighbor found her roaming in the culdesac.  I hadn't even realized she was gone, I was too busy trying to help Captain E with his homework and had thought she'd gone in the house with Dr. J.  He thought she was in the back with me.  It wasn't until I heard her screaming out front that I was hit with the panic.  Worst feeling ever realizing your kid might be gone!  I was so relieved my neighbor had grabbed her and brought her back!

This girl loves her mama.  There was a couple of days after I got back from my sisters wedding when she was really angry at me and she just didn't want to be by me but a week after I got home we were best buddies again.  She loves to give hugs and kisses, high fives, and fist bumps!

And this is why you have to have eyes on this girl all the time.  22 months and going strong!  We love our little Cheetah!

A Couple of Books I Read While My Phone Was Missing

So while my iphone was missing I had some time to read, and guess what I found, remember the blog where I named the reasons I don't read anymore, well it turns out the main reason I don't read anymore is my iphone because I'm too busy watching TV on it, or playing games, or looking at facebook, because in one of the two weeks I was without a phone I read four books.  Four books, which is more than I'd read probably in three months.  So there you go.  No iphone, I read a ton, iphone, I don't.  So here you go...

Salt - Maurice Gee
Product DetailsIf you like young adult fiction, you might consider this one.  It's another one of those magic, civilization at war, two people from different groups falling in love kind of books, but I enjoyed it.  The romance side was a little weak, and I think they may have had sex at the end of the book, seemed kind of the way guys write romance, but the story was fairly entertaining.  Sort of reminiscent of Ship Breaker.  Of the two Ship Breaker was definitely my favorite but this was an easy quick read, and if I recall the authors first book, so not bad.

The Edge of Nowhere - Elizabeth George

Product Details
So Elizabeth George is one of those authors I've probably been reading for over ten years now.  She is an American but most of her previous novels are mystery and involve the main English character Inspector Lynley.  Now I'd be lying if I didn't say I was sort of in love with Thomas Lynley so this jump of hers into adolescent fiction was a surprise.  Maybe she wanted to write about someone American for a change, or maybe she was looking to score some of the Hunger Games/Twilight teen fan love, but this showing just didn't do it.  Becca King is a mind reading on the run from her step father, living on Whidbey Island, near Seattle.  She's has a crush on this kid named Derric and even though she can read minds, doesn't really effectively use that skill to solve the crime of how he ended up in an accident.  It just sort of drags.  Neither the love story nor the mystery are particularly engaging.  Not so bad I didn't finish it but bad enough that I didn't really feel like finishing it.

The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope - Rhonda Riley

Product DetailsThis was my favorite of the three offerings.  What genera would this even be, historical, sci-fi romance.  Is it even possible for something like that to exist?  So in this story Evelyn Roe finds an alien while spending a summer alone on the family farm.  She saves the creature and it becomes her mirror image.  They fall in love and the creature eventually shifts into a man who names himself Adam Hope.  The story pretty much just follows their lives.  It deals with adult themes like sexuality and marriage, but a least for me a lot of it felt like sitting in the kitchen listening to my aunts talk.

Desert Angel - Charlie Price

Product DetailsThis is another girl on the run book. Angel is 14 years old when she witnesses her mom be murdered by her boyfriend who is a crazy pyscho child abusing tracker.  She takes off running and he follows.  Attacking and torturing anyone who tries to help her.  It is fast read and gets your heart pounding.  A little bit suspenseful for a young adult book.

Finally I didn't finish this in the non phone week, but I did just finish it.

Siege and Storm - Leigh Bardugo

Product DetailsThis is of the Grisha Trilogy I'm currently in the middle of.  The first book was Shadow and Bone.  I really liked it.  It is a typical magic and the destruction of civilization, throw in some will they won't they romance young adult series but they are quick reads and I like the silly stories.  I guess I just like getting carried away in the will they won't they.  In this book it got a little bit ridiculous because all the sudden there are new interest, but I'm still on board and am bummed out I have to wait until 2014 to find out the end of the saga.

1st Day of School

How did I get so far behind in my post?  The first day of school happened two weeks ago.  Early start, I know.  Gigi started first grade.  I met her teacher at back to school night and I got kind of a negative vibe off her, my exact thought when I shook her hand, "oh boy, she is a yeller."  Look I get it, some of us are wound a little too tight (myself included), but Gigi is a girl who moves to her own drummer.  She isn't like me at all,  as a kid I wanted to please everyone, friends, parents, teachers.  I would never dream of breaking a rule. Gigi on the other hand knows what she likes and doesn't and does not appreciate people trying to make her do things she doesn't want to do.  Sometimes it drives me nuts.  She can be super stubborn.  Sometimes it makes me glad.  I never worry about her doing something purely because of peer pressure but I also see her as the type of person who wouldn't be against breaking a few laws if she felt they were unjust.  I can imagine having to bail her out of jail someday because she broke into a medical lab and let all the animals loose.  That is just how she rolls.  So when I talked with her teacher I got the control vibe off her I started to worry a little.  Her teacher last year was so excellent at ignoring the stuff that really wasn't that big of a deal, dealing with the stuff that was without turning it into an issue and keeping school an overall positive experience for Gigi.  I'm wasn't sure, shot I'm still not sure that this teacher will be able to do that, so I'm keeping a tight eye on things.  The first week, wasn't so hot, she got in trouble three of the first seven days, but since then she's been progressively doing better, she even got an outstanding one day.  Who knows, maybe she sees the point of the behavior chart now or maybe she just had a super stellar day but I'm feeling a little more hopeful then I did the first day.  And the truth is Gigi doesn't mind and as long as she is still excited about learning then this mom is ok.  You know the kids who cries when the teacher yells at the class (me), that isn't her.  Do you like her outfit.  She picked it out herself.  This girl loves leggings :)

Captain E is in 4th grade this year.  What the heck!!!  How did this happen???  His teacher is amazing!  I mean if there could be love at first sight, this wouldn't be it, because the first time I saw her she was squinting at something on the board and had kind of funny grouchy face on, but the second we walked in the door and she turned she had the most genuine smile.  She rushed up and grabbed my hand and turned to Captain E and said, "Tell me all about your summer."  So really it was love at first word.  Captain E has his own struggles with school, he is extremely introverted but she is pulling him out of his shell.  She is so positive and fun that he loves being in her class.  The only hiccup this year for him, I sent him to school sick on the first day.  Can you believe it?  I still can't, but I got this call from the school at 1:30.  "Captain E hasn't been feeling well all day, and he has a fever.  Can you please come pick him up?"  Seriously so embarrassing.  So I picked him up and tucked him into bed.

A Second Trip to the Lake

Picture overload here people.  Remember when I went to the lake a few weeks ago and had our family pictures taken.  What I didn't tell you about that trip is that I also lost my iPhone.  I had it with me almost the entire trip and then after we changed and went and our pics taken, in that one hour it got lost...well actually probably lost/stolen because I tried calling it almost immediately after I realized it was gone and it had been shut off.  And here is the thing about your iPhone...you know all that tracking software, well it is easy to foil it by just keeping the phone off and then jail breaking the thing when you turn it back on.  I will never again waste my money on apple care.  The only thing they cover...stuff that shouldn't have gone wrong with the phone in the first place.  I will probably buy my next phone from best buy and just spring for their coverage which actually covers things like getting lost or smashed or dropped in the toilet.  Ok, but that is a story for another day, but what isn't is I was kind of bummed that I lost the pictures on the phone....especially the ones of Peach doing the splits in the surf.  The girl is just crazy flexible and I catch her doing the splits pretty much everywhere, like she thinks it is a comfortable way to sit, go figure.  But right before school started my mother-in-law flew out and we decided to take the kids on one last hurrah to the beach and guess what, I got another picture of her doing the splits in the surf!  So please enjoy a million and half pictures of my kids at the beach!
I got these Puddle Jumpers this year for Peach and Cheetah and I love them!  I had sort of the opposite problem with the girls...Peach was overly cautious and wouldn't get into the water unless I dragged her in, Cheetah was running into the deep end and I can't tell you how many times I had to get her from a face down plant.  Then I picked these babies up from Target.  The nice thing is they keep the kid's face out of the water (for the most part, you still need to watch but it buys you a few more seconds).  Another thing I love about them is that because they are actually life jackets endorsed by the US coast guard you can use them places like public swimming pools and beach's that forbid things like floaties, noodles, rafts, or tubes.  It has given Peach the confidence to get into the water without me dragging her.  It has kept Cheetah from going under countless times.  Definitely worth the 16 bucks I paid for them!

So nice having grandma with me.  Those extra two hands were a life saver...and look I didn't lose a second Iphone :)

He was really pushing the boundaries of what I was comfortable with.  "Mom, can I go out this far?"  "How about this far?"  I think one of the most difficult things about motherhood is realizing how fleeting your children's childhood is.  Yeah sure, sometimes you could do with a little less pooh to clean up but the amount of time you have where you can protect your kids, it goes so fast.  In a blink of an eye he is nine.  In another blink he'll be leaving home for college and then another and starting a family of his own.  Soon he won't even ask me if he is out too far.  Goes so fast.

They found some drift wood to play with.  Man they love the stuff.  What can I say, kids and their sticks!
Oh look a picture of mom!  I've taken to wearing these really comfy lose long sleeved cotton tops over my suit at the beach or pool.  Then if I want to swim I can slip it off, but if I don't it keeps me cooler and keeps my shoulders from getting sunburned.  Thirty-two years old I'm just sick of dealing with sunburns :)

Captain E loves being buried under the sand.  We've found the best way to do this is to dig a whole first and then jump in.  In this case the rest of the family then just stood around kicking sand on him :) Oops got some in your ear, no problem, Grandma will scoop it out for you!  Do you like how his eyes are closed?  This kid is a nutter, if he knows you are taking a picture he just can't keep them open.

Here you go, splits in the surf.  Seriously girl where did you get the flexibility from!

Nothing like dipping your apple in sand and then rinsing it off in contaminate lake water....um, yum :-/

Peach is getting so much braver, she even took her puddle jumper and used some small waves, to swim up onto the shore :)
There was a huge dune that grandma nicely climbed with the kids so they could all run down it again.  And then again.  And then again.  Mom enjoyed not having to do it with them and instead watched Cheetah eat sticks while video taping.
Peach and Cheetah...future life guards?
So it was cloudy the whole time we were there and even dropped a few rain drops on us, but I don't think it could have been a whole lots less beautiful.  I mean look at the sky and water....just gorgeous!  It was a great way to spend the last day of summer!

My happy little Peach!

What My Laundry Says About Me

I love Sherlock Holmes, you know how he looks at little tiny details and can tell you your life story.  Today while I was folding laundry I realized you could tell a heck of a lot about my family from that pile of clothes.

1) I'm a one and done kind of person.  No small load every day here people, no I wait until one day a week, the day when I run out of absolutely every pair of underwear I own and then I just muscle through huge piles.

2) Except I also like to procrastinate.  Because even though I only want to do laundry one day a week I started washing on Saturday and here it is Wednesday and I'm finally folding.

3) I'm cheap.  I can tell this by the fact that all of our underwear is no longer white, but sort of this graying color.  Do I like gray colored underwear, no, but do I want to buy more, heck no.

4) I'm a tad careless.  More than one pair of underwear has gotten pen stains on it from pens Dr. J has left in his work shirts.  He has done this more than once so you think I'd have learned my lesson, that when I tell him he'd better check his pockets because I don't he is going to forget and I still need to check, but still I forget to check his pockets.

5) I'm impatient.  I have more than one pair of underwear that have been slightly stained by a new pair of indigo jeans or a salmon skirt that said, "Colors will run, wash first before wear" that I completely ignored and just wore anyway.

6) I like to feel clean.  Since there is a pair of underwear for everyday it is a good guess I shower everyday.

7) But I must not mind a little dirt.  There is not a pair of pants for everyday, so even though I have something like 15 of pairs of jeans I stick with my favorites which I wear two-three times before I wash them.

8) My older kids don't shower enough :(  I only found two pairs of underwear for the week for Captain E and Gigi.  Theoretically I'd like them to shower at LEAST every other day, but obviously I'm not hitting that goal.  Maybe we can just say they are conserving water :)

9) I have a just barely four year old who has way too many accidents.  I swear there are fifteen pairs of underwear in there, although a couple aren't ours and need to be returned to friends at whose houses she's peed.  She does this thing where she wants me to take her to bathroom, turn the lights on, open the toilet and the whole time she's standing around doing a potty dance and then she pees a tiny bit.  Or just as often she gets on the pot on time but pees off the edge onto her pants.  Seriously child you are killing me.

10) I hate to iron.  There is a pile of fifteen or so work shirts sitting on our treadmill.  I keep hoping Dr. J will fold and iron them but when you get as little time as he does off, I guess the last thing you want to do is iron....still though :(

11) Speaking of those shirts my husband is a white collar/professional.  He has to dress in slacks, button down shirts, and a tie almost everyday.  But not a white collar professional making tons of money because I'm still doing his laundry and not sending it out to the dry cleaners.

12) Most likely in the medical field.  There are two pairs of scrubs a week (from his 24+4 call days) and a clean lab coat waiting to be ironed.

13) Hubby sleeps in his pajamas, I don't.  When I was a child it always embarrassed me that my mom only slept in her underwear.  "Mom," I would yell, "I can totally see through those."  Well here we are fifteen years later and I finally understand.  I hate things bunching around my waist when I'm sleeping.

14) I'm Mormon.  We wear top and bottom underwear.

15) I am not a small woman.  My husband is a thin man.

16) I have four children.  One boy, three girls.  The boy is somewhere between the ages of 8-10, long legged but thin, everything is size slim and has elastic with buttons to cinch the waist.  He wears a lot of pairs of socks, especially considering it is summer, but is careless with where he takes them off because three are missing mates.  There is a girl age 5-7 also long legged and thin.  She hardly ever wears socks.  She likes the color pink and she loves skirts.  There is a girl 3-4.  She also likes dresses and favors the color purple.  There is a baby girl 6 months-2.

17) I either don't work or have a job where I can dress casual.

18) I love Target.

So there you go, everything I could figure out about myself while folding my drawers.  Man I wish laundry wasn't so tedious or if I do have to keep doing it that the new season of Sherlock would start so I could at least stare at Benedict Cumberbatch while I fold.  Is that too much to ask?

1577 Miles, One Mom, Four Kids - Long Road Trip With Kids

I've been meaning to put this post together for months but I was a little distracted.  Now I have the time.  So this Christmas Dr. J ended up having an unexpected seven days off.  We were so excited by the thought of possibly going home but realized we couldn't afford six plane tickets on that short a notice and there was no way we had enough time to drive out and back to Utah in the days he had available.  I was a little disappointed because it had been awhile since we'd celebrated Christmas with our whole family and so I was complaining to my friend Melanie at the gym.  She said, "Why not drive out with Dr. J, have him fly back and then you can stay another week and drive home with the kids."  It sounded pretty good...well except the whole part about me driving home 1580 miles with four kids by myself but in the end I wanted to go so badly that is what we did and so that is how I found myself about to embark on an almost 1600 mile trip, four kids (1 being a nursing baby), a mom, and a van.  It was not my first time travelling on a long road trip, not even my first road trip alone, but it was my first with four kids.  Here is some of the stuff I've learned.

*I like to break my trip up in to 250-300 mile block chunks.  Essentially four hours of driving.  Example: Leave at 8:00.  Stop at 12:00 for lunch.  Preferably a place that has a play area.  On road trips McDonald's is your friend!  Let the kids out.  Potty, play, eat.  Get gas as you drive out of town at around 1:00.  Stop at 5:00.  Again a place where the kids can get out and stretch their legs.  (In the summer months Dr. J and I like to bring food and stop at rest stops where the kids can run around).  Potty, eat, gas.  Load up at 6:00.  Drive until 10:00.  Stop for gas and a potty break.  Drive until midnight, or one, or two, however late you feel comfortable.  Stop at a hotel.

*Potty Breaks.  EVERY PERSON HAS TO GO AT EVERY STOP RIGHT BEFORE WE GET IN THE CAR!  There is no exception to this rule. Even if you went when we first got to the stop if you want to get back in the car you sit on the pot before we leave.  I will occasionally stop at a rest stop if needed and more than once I've had to let a child pee on the side of the road, but more stops mean more time so I try to make sure everyone takes advantage of our scheduled stops.  Speaking of peeing on the side of the road, the easiest way to do this with a young daughter is to pull their pants down, then with them facing you, reach down and grab the underside of their thighs.  Have them grab your arms upper arms for stability.  You are holding them in a seated position above the ground.  Then spread your feet apart, lean forward and have them go, moving them around to angle their stream away from you.  No pee on them, no pee on you.  When they are done stand back up, step back and put them down on the ground.  I'm embarrassed to tell you how many times I've had to do this on the side of the road at ten at night but it works and eventually (Gigi is six now) they figure out how to squat and pee on their own).  We actually used this trick just last week when coming home from the dunes.  A rest stop was only two miles away but neither of my middle girls could wait so at 10:30 at night I was holding Peach in a squat and Gigi was peeing right beside us.  It was nuts.  If you have a son you can have him run off on his own or if he is little you can even have him pee just standing at the edge of the van door.  When in restaurants or gas station everyone goes in.  I'd take the girls to the bathroom and now because Captain E is nine I'd have to let him go to the bathroom on his own.  I'd tell him, "Ok, go in, do you business and then come right out and stand right here by this door.  If anyone tries to get you to come with them you start screaming!"  It sounds silly but I'm not going to lose a baby on one of these trips.

*Forget a diaper bag or purse, carry all your valuables in a backpack.  I always bring a backpack that has my diaper changing mat and diapers and wipes, my wallet, my phone, my camera, any important papers I need, my keys, and our toothbrushes.  If you are in a bathroom with three little kids you will be glad to have your arms free, a backpack provides that for you.  It keeps all you stuff together, zips up, and is hands free almost eliminating the chance you will leave something behind or drop something.  Also if you find yourself at two in the morning to tired to drive the last hour and half home and known you must stop you can just walk into a hotel carrying that backpack on your back with two kids in your arms and get a room, knowing you at least will have your toothbrush in the morning.

Hotels-The first night I stayed with my sister and actually stayed the following day.  Staying with friends or family is definitely the way to go because it is free, fun to visit, and if you can stay more than one night your kids sort of forget some of the trauma of the drive and don't cry the next day when you go to buckle them into their car seats.  The first night I stayed with my sister, and then stayed another day for good measure, but the day following that I had to stop at a hotel.  Here goes.

*Hotels with continental breakfast are you friends.  Some advertise themselves as such on signs, but I also would use my iphone to check if I was unsure.  When you have five people to feed in the morning, nothing beats "free".
*Keep a small bag with just one change of outfits and other toiletries.  Nobody wants to bring a huge bag into a hotel they are just stopping at for one night, especially if that person is going to be carrying more than one child.
*If you have a smart phone you can check rates before even going in.  I've even called their numbers from the parking lot to make a reservation.
*When travelling alone with children cheapest isn't always best.  I like to go to a cluster of hotels and pick one that is brightly lite and looks clean/well maintained.
*Bed bugs are real so be careful.  I always leave my bag by the door or on a desk or table.  Then I'll pull up the sheets to check for bed bug waste.  I used to think I was maybe overreacting but recently my friend staying in a suite in Nauvoo reported finding a bed bug in her hotel.  So yeah I'm going to stay on the lookout.

Entertainment-Long road trips are especially trying on children, entertainment is a must!
*When we first get into the car I don't give the kids a thing.  That first hour or so they are at their very best and I want to take advantage of them just looking out the window.  We play games like I spy, road trip bingo, or the alphabet game.  Then I will often hand/throw out activity books and real books.  If we can make it to lunch with no media I call it a good trip.  I wish my kids could read more in the car but both of my oldest get horrible car sickness so I'm trying to balance non media time with potentially puke factor.  After lunch I'll pull out the DVD player.  They will usually watch three movies at this point.  They are pretty happy though the first one, getting grouchier by the second, all out fighting over the third.  Hopefully by this point we've made it to to dinner.   After dinner I hand out other media devices.  On this particular trip I was lucky enough to have two itouches, an ipad, and a kindle.  My kids then have a couple hours of game time.  I have chargers in the car so if their device dies I can trade it out for another and charge it while I drive.  For myself the hardest thing I've found about driving alone without another adult is the boredom and the tiredness.  Two things I found that help the most, books on tape and dance music.  I will put two or three books on my phone to listen to as we drive.  If I ever start feeling a little down I'll put on some dance music which will usually lighten my mood.  The truth is electronic devices are a life saver for me on these trips.  I don't remember how we used to do it pre media entertainment but I do remember we didn't use to have to be in seat belts and car seats so maybe that helped and I also remember I listened to a ton of beach boys as a kid so maybe it was my mom who taught me dance music helps things go faster.

Food
Like I said before I like to use meal times as a chance for the kids to get out of the car but road trips also involve a lot of snacking.  We always bring a cooler full of things like cheese sticks, gogurts, frozen juice boxes and pepperonis and ham.  We have a bag full of foods like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit, cookies/crackers, popcorn, even candy to help keep people happy.  I'll divide the snacks up into individually bagged portions and if the kids ask for something have been known to toss it back.  This last strip was really nice because Captain E sat in the middle and I could easily have him reach into the cooler and bags to hand snacks out.  I also have a small water bottle for each kid so they can take care of their thirst.  It is a tricky line you walk, trying to keep them hydrated but not having to stop every hour for someone to pee.  My other rule of thumb is play place trumps anything else.  So if there is a play place that is where we stop.  It can get super annoying as an adult, especially if you are one like me who any type of variation to the schedule causes your intestines to decide to quit functioning but I've found ways to get the fiber I need.  Almost every place you stop has a soup or salad option.  My favorite is actually chick-fil-a.  They have not only a playground but I chicken noodle soup option.  A win/win for me.  If you are in smaller towns you are going to be more limited.  McDonald's Asian chicken salad and I go way back.  Steak-n-shake is another family favorite.  They might not have a play place but they have these little paper cars the kids love, roomy booths, chefs' hats, milk shakes and salad :) Also road trips are the only time when I indulge in a lot of soda drinking especially the caffeine kind.  Let's face it.  Stay alert on a road trip is hard.  For me caffeine can help.

Things To Keep Close At Hand
Cell phone.  I know back in the day people didn't have phones that could travel with them, but we do. I would never again do a road trip without a phone.  I always keep it charged.  Especially in the winter you do not want to get stranded on the side of the road without a way to call for help.  Speaking of getting stranded on the side of the road, some extra blankets, water, food, and small first aid kit.  And don't forget the lip gloss.  I have never been on a road trip where I did not get chapped lips.  Finally my gps.  Not only does it tell me the way to go but it also tells me the closest place to eat or potty, information far worth the cost of your GPS.

Finally Safety.  Don't drive when you are falling asleep.  The best time to drive is when the kids are sleeping but don't let that fact make you do something stupid.  If you are tired stop to get gas and walk around.  Get some caffeine.  Eat a snack.  Listen to some upbeat music.  Use your phone and chat hands free with a friend or family member.  If that doesn't jog you out of your fog then it is time to stop.  I was 1 1/2 hours from home on a 26 hour drive and I stopped.  I so wanted to be in my own bed but when driving with precious cargo it is worth the headache of stopping to avoid falling asleep on the road.  Avoid out of the way roads.  You don't want to go off the road on a poorly traveled route.  For the most part I stick to the interstate or really well traveled highways.  Never let your tank get lower than 1/4 tank.  You don't want to risk running out of gas when you have a bunch of whiny kids in the car.  Sometimes your kids are just going to scream and cry. Especially your nursing baby.  Be prepared to accept this is ok.
