Dr J is into contemporary Christian music. He likes to listen to it on the way to and from work. I think he feels like it grounds him in some way. I myself have never been that into it. My radio station is usually tuned into NPR or pop music, but the last two years since we moved out here I find myself switching to the Christian music station more and more. It is a genre that I'm not entirely familiar with. Mormons are not really raised on "hip" church music. We pretty much stick to our hymnal, that were hymns originally gathered by Emma Smith in 1835. There have been some more recent additions including songs specifically written for the hymnal but for the most part they stay very true to the type of puritan sound that would mainly be played on the piano or organ. I can count on two hands the number of times I've heard other instruments used during a sacrament meeting and I've never seen a guitar or a drums used. So contemporary christian music with it's guitars and drums, it's modern sound is very foreign to me. But this last year I've gotten very attached to a few of the songs that I've heard...attached enough to even buy them off itunes...which for me is a pretty big deal because I'm cheap, cheap and I hate buying anything. SO while the whole rest of the world is super into "Let it Go" the song I'm always humming is "Oceans" by the Australian band Hillsong United.
The words are...
You call me out upon the waters
the great unknown, where feet may fail
and there I find you in the mystery
in oceans deep, my faith will stand
I will call upon your name
and keep my eyes above the waves
when oceans rise
my soul will rest in your embrace
for I am yours and you are mine
Your grace abounds in deepest waters
your sovereign hand will be my guide
where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
you've never failed and you won't start now
I will call upon your name
and keep my eyes above the waves
when oceans rise
my sound will rest in your embrace
for I am yours and you are mine
And you are mine...
spirit lead me where my trust is without boarders
let me walk upon the waters
wherever you would call me
take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
and my faith will be made stronger
in the presence of my Savior
Oh Jesus there, my god
I will call upon your name
keep my eyes above the waves
my soul will rest in your embrace
I am yours and you are mine
Seriously I just think it is so beautiful. It fills my heart like a prayer every time I hear it.
That IS pretty!
